Black Walnut

Anyone have the MSDS for Black Walnut? Suggestions for bisque fire temperature? Will it mature at cone 5 or does it have to go to cone 6? Is it food safe and appropriate for functional work? What makes it dark (an oxide)? |
I was wondering when you were going to start carrying black cherry? i have been awaiting its arrival it much anticipation.
Unfortunately, the testing/development of Black Cherry has been put on hold as results have not been consistent.
Brent here from Campbell's. We hope to post the MSDS for Black Walnut in a week or two but it does have the AP seal as non-toxic. It is dinnerware safe and contains no manganese. I suggest bisque firing at 04. We recommend firing to a true cone 6 to mature the body(getting the rich color.) You could fire to cone 5 but I recommend doing an absorption test to check the percentage. It would probably be acceptable if it is under 3 percent absorption but I prefer a very tight clay under 1.5 percent. Unfortunately, I cannot share any information about what makes Black Walnut so dark as it is proprietary information of Campbell's. Just let me know if you have any question. I'll be glad to help!
Brent,
Thanks for the info. I asked about what makes the dark color because it really stains your hands when you throw with it. Just wanted to make sure it was safe to use.

I was reading the conversation you had with another about the clay, but I don't see the reply for is the clay safe since does stain your hands while working with it... ? I so want to get this clay and want to know since it stains...
thanks much..
Black Walnut is quite safe to work with. But with any clay, be aware that clay dust can be hazardous.
