Baby Hand and Footprints

I am doing a baby platter for a client. In the past, I have used iron oxide painted on the baby's hands and feet, then imprinted onto cone 05 bisque, then fire to cone 6. Are there other oxides that might be safe for this process? Has anyone used glazes for this process (instead of oxides)?

While Iron Oxide is one of the safer materials to work with in the ceramic material spectrum, I would avoid exposing a baby's skin to any oxide because it is very difficult to know if a skin reaction will occur. Also, because of the way oxides stain the skin even after vigorous washing, there may also be exposure to the eyes and mouth. This is something you may wish to take into account from a business liability standpoint. Other pigments that would create the same effect would also have the same potential for skin reaction.
