mixing glazes

My husband and I are interested in mixing glazes. Does the mesh count of the sieve make a significant difference? Thanks.

Baby Hand and Footprints

Submitted by anniespottery on Mon, 11/05/2007 - 8:20am. ::

I am doing a baby platter for a client. In the past, I have used iron oxide painted on the baby's hands and feet, then imprinted onto cone 05 bisque, then fire to cone 6. Are there other oxides that might be safe for this process? Has anyone used glazes for this process (instead of oxides)?

Firing clay with air pockets will cause it to explode?

Submitted by clayguy31 on Fri, 10/05/2007 - 4:50pm. ::

I thought this was true for quite sometime but it is a myth, to some extent. Often new students will construct pieces that might have air pockets because they do not sufficiently wedge their clay and they are warned these might explode. It isn't the air pocket but the moisture it contains that will cause the explosion or blowout. These warnings are quite valid for a class because firings are run often and these pockets may still contain too much moisture. However, if a piece is left to dry completely and the bisque firing is done very slowly, the odds are very good that it will be just fine.

Black Walnut

Submitted by shuckpottery on Wed, 06/27/2007 - 10:11pm. ::

Anyone have the MSDS for Black Walnut?

Suggestions for bisque fire temperature?

Will it mature at cone 5 or does it have to go to cone 6?

Is it food safe and appropriate for functional work?

What makes it dark (an oxide)?

Silicon Carbide and Granular Rutile

Submitted by clayguy31 on Tue, 04/24/2007 - 8:55am. ::

I have been adding silicon carbide or granular rutile to various lowfire commercial glazes(primarily metallic glazes) for years now to produce various mottled/textured surfaces. I prefer it in the metallic glazes because it breaks up the shiny and smooth surface. Does anyone else have glaze additives they enjoy and what glazes do they modify??

Sculptural Work

How do you price your sculptural clay work? Most people try to figure hours spent plus materials but still debate what hourly rate to set. Since most sculptors work slowly, it usually seems lower than minimum wage.
