Colorants and Opacifiers

Yellow OchreAn iron earth compound used to produce yellows and browns.

ZircopaxZirconium Silicate used as an opacifier in glazes. Also controls the color stability and reduces crazing.

Tin OxideA strong opacifier.

Silicon CarbideAn alloy that may be used to create a localized reduction in electric kilns or to create craters and "foaming" in glazes.

Red Iron OxideA common oxide producing red clay bodies and tans, red, and browns in oxidation firing. In reduction iron oxide can produce a wide variety of colors including greens, brown and reds. Sold by the pound.

Light Rutile PowderedRutile is a crystalline form of titanium and used alone will produce a variety of tans. Used in combination with other coloring oxides can produce mottling, streaking and other variegated effects.

Rutile PowderedA source of titanium in glazes. Produces tans or browns and used in combination with other colorants, rutile may create streaking and mottling.

Nickel Oxide BlackOxide form of nickel. Used to produce browns and blues with zinc, tans with whiting, and grays with barium.

Nickel CarbonateCarbonate form of nickel. Used to produce browns and blues with zinc, tans with whiting, and grays with barium.

Nickel Oxide GreenInterchangeable with black nickel oxide, producing browns and blues with zinc, tans with whiting and grays with barium.

Powdered Manganese DioxideUsed mainly as a colorant producing browns, blacks and purples in alkaline glazes. Also may be used to produce dark colored clays.

Granular Manganese DioxideUsed mainly as a colorant producing browns, blacks and purples in alkaline glazes. Also may produce a dark speckled clay body.

Chromium OxideA colorant used to produce greens or in combination with tin, iron, or zinc to produce pinks, yellows and browns

Black Copper OxideThis is the major oxide colorant to produce greens, blue greens, and copper reds

Copper CarbonateMajor colorant used to produce greens, blue-greens and copper reds.
